mui zyu

London, United Kingdom

mui zyu is a British/Hong Kong artist based in London who crafts music that feels like stepping into a dream –

where delicate melodies, haunting textures, and surreal storytelling blur the lines between reality and fantasy. Drawing inspiration from her parents’ Cantonese record collection, video game soundtracks and film scores, her sound is both intimate and cinematic, dark yet full of hope. Her lyrics explore themes of cultural displacement, escapism, and alienation, creating a world that is abstract yet deeply personal. The Guardian describes the mui zyu world as “playful pop that’s left-field and tender, dissonant and melodic all at once… crafting her own absurd, beautiful home.”

Critically acclaimed for her distinct artistic voice, mui zyu has released two records with US label Father/Daughter Records, as well as an EP of Cantonese songs, for which she received translation guidance from her father in Hong Kong and the brilliant Emma Lee Moss (FKA Emmy The Great).

On her debut album ‘Rotten Bun for an Eggless Century’ mui zyu utilized “knotty electro-pop shot through with field recordings and traditional Chinese instruments” - Pitchfork, to explore heritage and otherness, crafting what The Line of Best Fit described as “music for feeding broken hearts.” On the follow-up record ‘nothing or something to die for’ her sound evolved as she blended “sparkling synth-pop melodies, Stereolab-lite rock minimalism, pillowy vocals, and a thematic through line that delves into human connection amid a fractured digital age” - Pitchfork.

mui zyu’s music is as much about world-building as it is about sound. NPR Music describes her as an artist on a mission to escape, “inviting you into a fantasy world run by sorcerers, witches, and lonesome warriors.” The immersive quality of her work has referenced Chinese folklore through a lo-fi dream pop kaleidoscope, “with delicate pianos bathed in distorted synths providing a brittle shell that surrounds mui zyu’s plight” - The Fader. Her songs feel like “sweeping, cinematic compositions that sound straight out of fantasy novels” - Nylon, a feeling reinforced by her signature blend of dreamy textures and eerie undertones. Rough Trade has called her music “a beguiling lo-fi pop delicacy” capturing the balance of light and shadow at the heart of her songs.

Her ability to juxtapose beauty with dissonance is what makes her work so distinctive. Wonderland highlights this contrast, calling her music “a dichotomy of beauty and oddity… dazzling melodic work and poignant lyrics juxtaposed against glitchy soundscapes and surprising twists.” Crack describes it as “a transcendent and healing sonic escapism that balances shimmering, melodic ambience with haunting, darker undertones.”

mui zyu’s mesmerizing live performances have taken her across the globe. She has played with Bat For Lashes, Caroline Rose, Lucrecia Dalt and Julie Byrne and performed at major festivals across Europe, Asia, and the USA, including SXSW, End of the Road, Left of the Dial, Latitude, Manchester Psych Festival and Hong Kong’s Clockenflap. Following her recent performance at Clockenflap, she embarked on a special tour in Taiwan and Japan. Her hometown shows consistently sell out in advance, and she recently performed headline shoes on coasts of the US.

Her music has been widely championed on radio, with consistent support from Steve Lamacq at BBC 6 Music, as well as airplay across BBC, NTS, KEXP, and NPR. Beyond this, mui zyu has crafted unique mixes for Dublab, Foundations, Voices, and Reprezent, showcasing her eclectic influences and deep sonic curiosity.

mui zyu loves exploring new dimensions of her music through remixes, embracing reinterpretations that expand and transform her songs. She has collaborated with innovative artists, including Lucy Liyou, Flora Yin Wong, Mini Trees, and Hinako Omori, who have reimagined her songs in idiosyncratic and unexpected ways.

She has also written original songs for the award winning video game series Life Is Strange.
Beyond her own music, mui zyu is also an adventurous DJ, recently performing a hypnotic set for the London Short Film Festival at the ICA.

With a new record currently in the works, mui zyu continues to expand her unsettling sonic universe.
